Then work backward from there: Use tools like Google Trends and Keyword Tool (both free) to see which keywords have search volume over time, as well as how much competition those keywords have. There are even paid tools like SpyFu ($99 per month) that can give you detailed data about a given term or competitor.

From there, consider how many pages of content would be required to effectively target each keyword—one page per topic? Two? More? Also, think about who might use certain keywords; while generic terms will net traffic no matter who types them into Google, highly specific ones may be used only by small segments of people. In short: Know thy audience. The more specific your website’s focus is—and the more topics it covers—the easier it’ll be for users to find exactly what they’re looking for in their searches; thus making sure that said searches lead directly back to your site.
