The Garmin Fenix 7 is a very nice-looking GPS watch. It has sleek styling with a rounded glass front and metal back. The display is about 45mm wide, but it has a fairly small face (35mm diameter) so it fits nicely on my wrist (I have medium-sized wrists).

The buttons are well laid out, easy to use and they are easy to find while I’m wearing them. The button in question is on top of one of my wrists; when I reach for it, it is always where I expect it to be. Garmin calls these buttons tool and home. These can also be customized from a collection of watch faces that come with the device (more on that later).

The home screen shows me some basic information at a glance such as battery life (along with an icon showing if GPS is on or off), altitude, time of day, and heart rate.

The Garmin Fenix 5 is an extremely popular fitness watch, with a solid reputation and impressive overall user reviews. If you’re looking for a top-notch device to track your workouts, there are plenty of reasons to pick up one of these.

One thing that sets it apart from other GPS smartwatches on our list is its rugged design—this is waterproof and built to handle some serious outdoor activities. However, as with most watches like these, it does tend to be on the pricier side;

The watch itself measures 1.9 x 0.8 x 0.5 inches and weighs just 6 ounces (not including any additional straps or bands), making it both lightweight and slim—it fits comfortably on your wrist without too much trouble.

Plus, there are a ton of different band options available that let you customize it to suit your personal style, which is a nice touch. Other than size, there aren’t many standout design features to note; buttons are laid out across three sides of the device and include basic functions like stopwatch/timer buttons, up/down/select keys, an altimeter function button, and backlight controls.

The entire face rotates vertically for scrolling through menus, with data displayed on a rectangular screen—data can be added (or removed) from multiple watch screens for easy access to common metrics.

There are only two watch settings: time and metric or standard miles (the difference between using metric and standard comes down to whether your pace per mile is calculated in minutes or seconds).

All data aside from time (in either format) must be set manually by accessing individual metrics. By default, only three metrics appear at a time on your watch screen, and you have to swipe up or down to see more data points; for example, when monitoring heart rate, you can choose between Time in Zone and Average Heart Rate.

Garmin Fenix 7 vs. Fenix 3 HR – A Comparison

The Garmin Fenix 3 HR, which was released in 2016, remains one of our favorite GPS smartwatches because it’s rugged, versatile, and feature-packed. It has a large display that’s easy to read while exercising and lets you store hundreds of songs for offline listening.

But many runners will be disappointed to learn that Garmin no longer produces it. Instead, we recommend the Fenix 7—which is nearly identical to its predecessor but comes with better battery life (up to 16 hours) and an added barometer.

These are two features worth paying extra for if you frequently go on long hikes or enjoy mountaineering since they can track changes in elevation more accurately than GPS alone. Both watches also have an optical heart rate monitor (although some buyers reported issues with this feature), as well as a compass and altimeter.
